The African Spelling Bee: A Legacy of Continental Dominance

The African Spelling Bee (ASB) was founded in 2016 by national spelling bee organizations across the continent, with the Nigeria Spelling Bee representing Nigeria as one of the visionary founding organizations of the African Spelling Bee (ASB).

Over the years, Team Nigeria has traveled to:

  • Johannesburg, South Africa (2016): Team Nigeria clinched top podium spots in the inaugural championship.
  • Mombasa, Kenya (2018): Nigerian spellers dominated the senior category with remarkable linguistic composure.
  • JinJa, Uganda (2019): Nigeria was crowned the Best Country Spelling Bee Team in Africa.
  • Abuja, Nigeria: Hosted the continent in Nigeria's capital city, welcoming over 15 nations to celebrate African youth intellect.
  • Harare, Zimbabwe (2026): Oluwadamilola Adeolu crowned the African Junior Champion; Abdurrahman Yusuf taking 3rd place; Nigeria winning 2nd Best Country Team.

The Spelling Bee World Cup: Conquering the Global Stage

In July 2026, the Nigeria Spelling Bee made its historic entry onto the global stage at the Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China. Facing formidable national teams from North America, Europe, and Asia, Nigeria's spellers demonstrated unmatched mastery of etymology, word origin interrogation, and phonetic precision.

The delegation captured the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category, with spellers Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf taking individual awards, proving beyond doubt that Nigerian students can compete and triumph anywhere in the world when equipped with true linguistic training.

How Team Nigeria is Selected and Prepared

The selection process for Team Nigeria is rigorous, transparent, and entirely merit-driven:

  1. National Grand Finale Qualification: Spellers qualify directly from their respective State Qualifiers to the prestigious National Grand Finale, hosted each year in selected host cities across Nigeria.
  2. Podium Merit: The highest-scoring spellers in the Junior and Senior categories earn the honor and opportunity to represent Nigeria internationally.
  3. Intensive National Linguistic Boot Camp: Selected spellers undergo weeks of advanced coaching covering classical Greek, Latin prefixes, French orthography, German phonology, and mock stage simulations.
  4. Official National Flag Presentation: With endorsement from the Federal Ministry of Education, spellers are handed the Nigerian national flag before departing for international host cities.
